Privacy Sandbox

A Google initiative to replace third-party cookies with alternative technologies (Topics API, Protected Audience).

Privacy Sandbox is a Google initiative to create alternatives to third-party cookies that enable personalised advertising whilst preserving user privacy.

What is Privacy Sandbox?

Privacy Sandbox is a set of technologies being developed by Google for Chrome, intended to replace user tracking via third-party cookies. The aim is to strike a balance between user privacy and the needs of the advertising industry.

Key components of Privacy Sandbox

  • Topics API – Assigns interest categories to users based on browsing history
  • Protected Audience – Remarketing audiences without cross-site tracking
  • Attribution Reporting – Conversion measurement without individual tracking
  • Private State Tokens – Verification without cookies
  • Fenced Frames – Isolated frames for adverts

Topics API

The browser locally determines the user's interests (e.g. "Travel", "Fitness") and shares them with advertising partners. Data remains in the browser and is not shared individually.

Current status

Google originally planned to remove third-party cookies in Chrome, but in 2024 announced a change of plan. Instead of blocking them entirely, it will offer users a choice. Privacy Sandbox technologies are available as an alternative.

Impact on marketing

Marketers should prepare for a world with limited third-party cookies by leveraging first-party data, contextual advertising and new APIs from Privacy Sandbox.
