You encounter cookies on the internet every day. But do you know what they actually are and why every website asks for your consent? We explain it simply.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites store in your browser. They are used so that a website can "remember" information about you.

For example, thanks to cookies:

  • You stay logged in to a website
  • An online shop remembers what is in your basket
  • A website knows which language you prefer
  • Adverts are displayed based on your interests

Types of cookies by purpose

Necessary cookies – The website does not work without them. These include login, shopping basket or security features. These cookies do not require consent.

Analytical cookies – They measure traffic and user behaviour. For example, Google Analytics. They require consent.

Marketing cookies – They track you across websites and display targeted advertising. Facebook Pixel, Google Ads. They require consent.

Functional cookies – They remember your preferences (language, region). They usually require consent.

First-party vs. third-party cookies

First-party cookies are created directly by the website you are visiting. They are generally less invasive.

Third-party cookies are created by domains other than the one you are visiting – typically advertising networks. These cookies are the most closely scrutinised by regulators.

Google Chrome has changed its plans regarding third-party cookies. Instead of a complete phase-out, it will offer users greater control.

Why do you need consent?

Under GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, you must obtain informed consent from the user before storing cookies that are not strictly necessary for the website to function.

Consent must be:

  • Freely given – the user must not be forced
  • Specific – for each cookie category separately
  • Informed – you must explain what the cookies are used for
  • Unambiguous – an active action (click), not pre-ticked checkboxes

How to implement cookies properly?

You need a cookie banner that blocks cookies until consent is obtained and allows the user to select categories. With Consentio, you can set it up in 5 minutes.
